Get off the beaten track in Croatia

Friday, 13 April 2014 11:03 AM

Booking villa holidays in Croatia promises you the opportunity to have an incredibly chic and sophisticated getaway. You can spend your days walking in stunning countryside, visiting romantic castles and even sailing - the ultimate luxurious pastime.

Of course, the beaches are probably the main attraction here, but there's a lot more to do. So, if you want to escape the crowds of tourists, you'll have little difficulty. For our tips on some chic activities to enjoy while on your villa break, read on.

Head inland

As mentioned, the coasts of Croatia are the most popular places with tourists and, while there are some great spots to visit here, if you're looking to get off the beaten track it's best to head inland. There's much to reward you if you do, from national parks to historic towns and cities.

Close to Krapina in the north of the country you'll find Trakoscan Castle, which is definitely worth a visit. Its appearance has much in common with the romantic style of castle that you can see in Germany, but it dates back to the 13th century and was originally used as a fort. Today, it stands in elegantly-manicured gardens and inside has been turned into a museum, where you can see some of the rooms styled in the way they would have originally looked and browse the many artefacts on display.

Go sailing

Without a doubt, sailing is one of the most luxurious activities you can indulge in while on holiday, whether you hire a crewed vessel or skipper the boat yourself. Croatia is one of the best places in Europe for sailing holidays, as the Adriatic coast is peppered with seemingly countless islands, ranging from the popular tourist resort of Hvar to the quiet paradise of Mali Losinj.

Alternatively, you can head for the island of Mljet, which is arguably the most beautiful in the Adriatic. It is situated within a national park, so simply mooring up at one of the anchorages and admiring the view is worthwhile, but coming ashore is also recommended. This way you can get a closer look at the ruined castle that overlooks the bay of Luka Polace.

If you have been staying in the Roman city of Pula, you can instead go sailing around an archipelago that has national park status. Two of the islands - Veli Brijun and Mali Brijun - are open all day to visitors

Enjoy the countryside

Back on dry land there are plenty of other beauty spots to explore, as Croatia is home to its fair share of national parks. Two examples particularly worthy of attention are the Plitvice Lakes and Velebit.

The former is made up of 16 lakes that interconnect through a series of waterfalls, some just babbling down a couple of feet, while others cascade from great heights into the deep water below. For a great vantage point, you can take one of the walking trails that scale the heights of the tallest waterfalls, or stick to the lush woodlands below where you can enjoy the music of the rare birds singing.

Velebit is far more rugged but no less beautiful and it is home to hundreds of species of plant and animal life, making it ideal for fans of nature to go exploring. You might even spot a wolf, lynx or bear on your journey, but even if you don't, the sight of the towering mountain of Velebit will more than make up for it.
