London cocktail lounge named World's Best Bar

Tuesday, 16 October 2014 1:03 PM

London cocktail lounge Artesian is the number one bar in the world, according to a survey of the global drinks industry.

Drinks International’s The World's 50 Best Bars 2014 poll placed Artesian in the top spot, ahead of nominations from the UK, Europe, Asia, North America, Latin America the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East.

The bar, which is housed in the 5* Langham Hotel, opened in 2007 and is named after the 365 foot deep well that sits directly underneath the building and originally supplied all the fresh water for guests.

As well as reinventions of classic cocktail drinks, the menu also includes Artesian specialty mixes such as alice in wonderland, hot buttered rum and diamond swizzle- which comes garnished with gem encrusted mint leaves.

For indecisive drinkers, the cocktail flavour map orders the menu visually according to tastes and if that wasn’t impressive enough, then there’s the bar’s specially designed ice.

Produced using the very latest technology, it is purer, colder and with a higher density, making it last longer and keep your cocktails cooler.

Alex Kratena, Head Mixologist said: “It’s an honour to be recognised by the industry for all our hard work.

“We’re very proud of our innovative and diverse cocktail menu and we will continue to push the boundaries of cocktail experimentation”.

It was a great year for London, with six bars making it into the top ten. Other entries included Edinburgh's Bramble in tenth, The Baxter Inn in Sydney at number seven and PDT in New York as second placed runner up. The full list of 50 is available on the website

Though not technically a hotel, this room could possibly have the best view in the whole of London. When you picture this you’re probably imagining an exclusive pent house suite on top of some iconic building, not a wooden boat perched precariously on top of the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre, as if left there by retreating floods.
