Booking a stay in an Italy hotel is a great choice for holidays that incorporate sun, culture and great cuisine. A perennial favourite among British travellers, Sorrento is an excellent getaway option - find out the best spots to watch the world go by with our guide.

This little town's many cafes are an integral part of its unique culture and charming atmosphere, so visiting them is a must. There's certainly no shortage of choices, so you can pick anything from establishments famed for their excellent coffees and pastries to venues serving cocktails and even evening meals.

Situated in southern Italy, Sorrento's charm is compounded by its fabulous cliff-top setting. From here, you can see out over the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Bay of Naples.

Fauno Bar

This is perhaps one of the best cafes to visit on trips to Sorrento. Situated on the town's main square, Piazza Tasso, it spills out on to the pavement and offers excellent opportunities for people-watching. Indeed, since locals and tourists alike flock to this area, you can see a cross-section of the town's culture, from residents to fellow travellers.

Serving up fresh coffee and a host of pastries, ice creams and desserts made onsite, the cafe is an excellent place to enjoy a drink and a chat in the afternoon sunshine. What's more, as it also offers cocktails, it's a fun choice for an early-evening drink. As there is even a restaurant section, you can always opt to stay here for dinner too.

While sitting outside is undoubtedly the best option for soaking up the sun and watching the world go by, it's worth taking a peek at the interior while you're here. Its sculptured ceilings are cleverly lit by Merano glass and its walls feature brightly-coloured mosaics depicting the local coastline.

Latino Cafe

Located on the Corso Italia, the Latino Cafe is the ideal destination for couples - though it is perhaps better for gazing at each other than people-watching. Well known for its charming garden, which is full of orange and lemon trees, this venue has a wonderfully intimate atmosphere and a great list of snacks and drinks perfect for a relaxing afternoon. Like the Fauno Bar, this venue also serves main meals in the evening, so you can opt to stay here for hours on end if you please. Since it's such a lovely spot, it would be no surprise if you wanted to do so.

Pizzeria Da Franco

While not technically a cafe, the Pizzeria Da Franco is an excellent place to people-watch and enjoy some authentic Italian cuisine. A great choice for family holidays, it is famous for its delicious Neapolitan pizza, which many consider to be the best around.

Situated near to Cafe Latino on the Corso Italia, it is a popular place where locals and tourists alike dine, making it a good spot to observe all kinds of people. What's more, the decor here is charming, with bottles of olive oil crammed on the shelves and hams dangling from the ceiling.

Wherever you decide to go during your holiday, spending a little time in local cafes is a must, whether it's a real taste of local cuisine you're looking for or simply a chance to experience that classic European cafe culture. Indeed, no holiday to Sorrento is complete without it!
