The Seychelles is a great place to visit on a luxury holiday for many reasons - it boasts beautiful golden beaches, warm turquoise seas, year-round sunshine and some of the world's most beautiful natural sights. It is also an excellent destination to head to for food enthusiasts, as it enables you to taste a variety of cuisines from all over the world in one trip.

The reason behind this is that the country is home to a variety of cultures that have influenced the type of food available. You will find Chinese, Indian, Creole and European meals on most menus - here are just some of the flavours you can expect to sample in the Seychelles.

Indian cooking

The Seychelles' close proximity to India is one of the main reasons why spices, cooking methods and recipes popular in the south Asian country can be found in this archipelago. A lot of dishes have a strong kick to them as spices like cumin, ginger and coriander are commonly used, alongside chillies.

Curries are hugely popular here, with masala paste often being added to dishes. They are traditionally served with rice, which is a sundry that is found with nearly every meal in the nation. You can also find Indian snacks here so, if you love samosas and other spicy pastries, you'll be in your element.

Creole cuisine

There are lots of dishes in the Seychelles that have been influenced by Creole cooking, and you'll find the likes of salt fish, plantain and breadfruit used regularly in meals here. Popular Creole dishes cooking in the country include rougaille, a tomato sauce dish cooked with different meats and vegetables and served with rice and ladob, containing breadfruit, bananas and cassava combined with coconut milk.

Another dish you could try is katkat bannann, which consists of plantain, fish and coconut milk. Indeed, the addition of coconut milk to lots of recipes in the Seychelles is influenced by the archipelago's Creole culture.

European dishes

Lots of events have occurred over the years that have resulted in the introduction of European food to the Seychelles - from the occupation of the French to the surge in tourists visiting the islands. The effect of this is that there are a number of dishes available in the country that have distinct characteristics from the western continent.

For instance, you can find Italian food in lots of restaurants, with pasta-based dishes being extremely popular. You will also notice phrases such as fruits de mer, which is French for seafood, being bandied around on many menus.

While you might like to try something really different on your luxury holiday in the Seychelles, it is also often nice to know you will find something you are familiar with if you want to. For those days you want to try something new, you will also come across a huge variety of tropical fruit, seafood you've not heard before and a mix of eastern recipes.
