Driving along Route 66 is one of the US's most iconic holiday options. As well as giving you the chance to soak up some authentic culture and history, this kind of getaway is great for gastronomes hoping to seek out the very finest in US cuisine. Should this appeal to you, read our guide to find out about some of the most unmissable Michelin-starred restaurants you can dine at along this historic highway.

Bear in mind that the below aren't necessarily directly on Route 66, but they are all located in cities you will pass through along the way - destinations well worth spending a day or two in as a break from the open road. To avoid disappointment, make sure you book your table in advance; it makes sense to do this when organising your accommodation in each place you will be stopping at. You can find out more about touring Route 66 by clicking here.

Route 66 runs all the way from Chicago to Los Angeles, so it's logical for us to begin at the start of the highway by looking at what is available in the former. If you only go to one restaurant here, make sure it is the three Michelin-starred Alinea, which is a mecca for foodies searching for the ultimate in modern cuisine. Situated at 1723 North Halsted, it has a strong reputation for the calibre of its innovative cooking.

Chef Grant Achatz is known for creating lots of small, bite-sized dishes, which are presented in slick modern surroundings. As well as harnessing the latest cooking techniques, chef Achatz also pioneers unusual serving methods, including serving some dishes directly on to the table, while others are suspended from wires. So, it is definitely the place to go if you want a unique, memorable experience.

Joel Robuchon Restaurant

Our next top restaurant is located in the heart of Las Vegas at the MGM Grand hotel. Joel Robuchon Restaurant is, as you will no doubt have gathered from its name, where you can experience the culinary expertise of celebrated French chef Joel Robuchon. Named France's chef of the year by the restaurant guide Gault Millau, he came out of retirement to open this eatery, which represents his first foray into the US.

Like Alinea, this restaurant boasts three Michelin stars. Having a limited seating capacity, it offers an intimate atmosphere in which you can choose from an a la carte menu or opt to have a multi-course tasting menu. If you are hoping to get as a broad an experience of Robuchon's cooking as possible, the latter is probably the best choice.

The final restaurant on our list is Providence, which can be found on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. An absolute must for seafood fans, this restaurant is based around the idea of the natural abundance of coastal living. So, its menu heavily features exquisite fish and shellfish, including oysters, Maine lobster and Japanese sardines, to name but a few.

Chef Cimarusti attests to this dedication to seafood on the restaurant's website, explaining: "The philosophy behind the food at Providence is rooted in my reverence for the natural state of wild fish. My goal is to help nature reveal its divine flavours, textures and beauty." Expect to dine in sleek, modern surroundings - and to enjoy some of the finest seafood you have ever eaten!
