There is something timeless about hiring a car and driving through some of the most glamorous destinations in Europe. As the wind blows through your hair on a country road in France or you admire the views over a stunning cove in Italy you could almost be in another age.

It is a great way to explore some of our own continent and enjoy all the luxury that it has to offer. If that sounds like your kind of escape then reserve a car through Auto Europe and start planning your road trip today.

Read on for ideas of the routes you may wish to consider.

The French Riviera

What could be more chic than following in the footsteps of movie stars, artists, writers and even royalty with a trip to the French Riviera? The weather in the southeast corner of France is typically moderate, meaning you will neither wilt nor freeze no matter what time of the year you visit.

Starting off in Nice and ending up in Marseille you will find yourself passing through some of the most stylish parts of the country along the way. These will include Monaco, Cannes and St Tropez, where you can enjoy staying in top class hotels and living the high life.

The standout accommodation on this road trip is the Hotel Martinez in Cannes in all its art deco glory. For the most decadent stay book one of the Prestige Vue Mer suites that were renovated relatively recently. Then all you have to do is sit back and sip champagne while enjoying the view of the Bay of Cannes.

The Amalfi Coast

The distance between Salerno and Sorrento on Italy's Amalfi Coast may seem pretty short, but you will find plenty of picturesque places to distract you along the way. Seaside villages and stunning clifftop views are what await as well as the chance to drive along the autostrada that has been used in numerous car adverts.

It is recommended that you eat and relax your way down the coast stopping off at decadent hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants. The impressive Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria beckons in Sorrento. This haunt of the rich and famous has been passed down the Fiorentino family for generations.

Since 1834 it has occupied a magnificent spot on the cliffs looking out onto a glittering sea. To reach the beach you simply have to step inside the lift inside the hotel, which will transport you right onto the sand.

The Dalmatian Coast

The great thing about the 600 kilometres of Croatia's Dalmatian Coast is that you can decide to drive as much or as little of it as you want or have time to. It is best to plan to end your trip in Dubrovnik as this really is the pearl in Croatia's glittering crown.

Where you start from is entirely up to you, with Split a little further up the coast one option; Zadar and Sibenik others. Each of these cities has something fantastic to offer, whether it is Diocletian's Palace or the sunsets that Alfred Hitchcock raved about.

You can split up your road trip with visits to one or two of the 1,200 islands that dot the coast. Each has its own personality and to really enjoy them in style charter a private yacht and park it in a marina alongside the other impressive vessels.

The Hotel Stari Grad is the place to stay, as it is set within the Old Town in Dubrovnik, allowing you to be accommodated right in the heart of this magical city. Breakfast is served on the roof terrace, from where you can see the old walls and terracotta tiles stretching off into the distance.
